PRESS RELEASE: Save Our Standards Statement on USPTO Confirmation

September 19, 2025, Washington, DC – Save Our Standards, a broad-based coalition of innovators, small businesses, associations, academics and consumer groups dedicated to supporting standards-based innovation and reinforcing the voluntary FRAND licensing commitment, released the following statement on the confirmation of John Squires to lead the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO):

“The USPTO plays a critical role in protecting American businesses and manufacturers. Now that the USPTO has a confirmed leader, the Save Our Standards coalition urges Director Squires to take action against abusive licensing practices involving standard essential patents (SEPs). Specifically, we call on the USPTO to:

  • Protect American businesses from foreign companies and other SEP licensor abusers who drive up costs for Americans,
  • Strengthen American investment in cutting-edge industries through predictability in SEP licensing, and
  • Reinforce the longstanding and well-tested American framework for patent injunctions established by the Supreme Court in the 2006 eBay v. MercExchange decision.

“We look forward to working with him in achieving the Administration’s goal of promoting American innovation and competitiveness.”
